About the locality:
In 1972 there were around 600 families in the village, most of them Bulgarian. The village has been documented since the second half of the 18th century. Bulgarian settlers came in two waves: in 1769–1774 and 1828–1834 (Roman, L. 1984: 138). According to data from 1834, sixty-five families (255 persons) moved there in 1828 from Silistra Region (Романски, С. 1930: 406–408). The 1838 registry of the population records the presence of 97 “Serbian” households (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 113). Bulgarians from Chisletu actively participated in the 1848 revolution (Velichi, C. N. 1971: 259, 260, 275–276, 277). Sources from the end of the nineteenth century estimate the number of residents at 2400, mostly “Serbs”, making a living as market gardeners (Alessandrescu, C. 1892: 116; Lahovari, G. I., C. I. Bratianu, G. Tocilescu 1898-1902 2: 389). In 1899 Weigand found over 2000 Bulgarians in this village which was known to him under the name Chiselet-Sârbi (Weigand, G. 1900: 119). Младенов, М. 1994 contains the dialect texts from Chiseletu that present traditional wedding customs.
