About the locality:
Settlement of Bulgarian refugees was documented in 1806–1814 and 1828–1834 (Roman, L. 1984: 138). In 1831 thirty-one Bulgarian families were residing there (Велики, К. Н., В. Трайков 1980: 248). The 1838 registry of the population records the presence of 43 “Serbian” households in Vărăşti-Sârbi and 44 in Vărăşti-Băjenari (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 113). There is data about Bulgarian settlers who came in 1812 and 1832 from Hŭrsovo, Razgrad Region (Жечев, Н. 1983: 56; Милетич, Л. 1902: 138; Младенов, М., Б. Нягулов, Н. Жечев 1994: 229). Bulgarians from Vărăşti actively participated in the 1848 revolution (Velichi, C. N. 1971: 259, 275). At the time of his visit in 1899, G. Weigand established that one third of residents were Bulgarian (Weigand, G. 1900: 119). Funeral rites are discussed in Васева, В. 2001. Regarding traditional culture at the end of the 20th century see Васева, В. 2011. Regarding the Bulgarian outlook of villagers in 1942, see Младенов, М., Б. Нягулов, Н. Жечев 1994: 338.
