Today within Bucharest city boundaries, the village is located on the railroad from Bucharest to Giurgiu. Bulgarians settled here in two waves; in 1806–1814 and 1828–1834 (Roman, L. 1984: 137). A document describing a conflict with the authorities in 1830 has been published in Романски, С. 1930: 187–188 and Младенов, М., Б. Нягулов, Н. Жечев 1994: 36–37. The 1838 registry of the population records the presence of 28 “Serbian” households (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 113). Bulgarians from Jilava actively participated in the 1848 revolution (Velichi, C. N. 1971: 261). Some families moved in 1885–1886 to Paicu. G. Weigand included the village in his atlas as a locality with Bulgarian population (Weigand, G. 1909: к. 67; see also Weigand, G. 1900: 119). At the end of the nineteenth century its 1195 residents, who were making a living in market gardening, were described as predominantly “Serbian” (Lahovari, G. I., C. I. Bratianu, G. Tocilescu 1898-1902 4: 105–106). S. Romanski, who visited the village in 1906, determined that half of the population was Bulgarian, originally from Plovdiv Region (Жечев, Н. 1983: 54; Младенов, М., Б. Нягулов, Н. Жечев 1994: 227). This localization is partially supported by dialect data. G. Weigand visited in 1899 a village Žiliana south of Bucharest with over 2000 Bulgarian residents (Weigand, G. 1900: 119). “Žiliana” probably refers to Jilava.
