About the locality:
The village was founded in 1828 by refugees from the so-called Grebenci villages of Silistra Region. Forty-five Bulgarian families were reportedly residing in Ceacu in 1828 and forty-three Bulgarian families was paying tax in 1834 (Милетич, Л. 1902: 161; Милетич, Л. 1903: 28; Roman, L. 1984: 135; Velichi, C. N. 1965: 70, 92; Велики, К. Н., В. Трайков 1980: 395, 398). A document, shedding light on a tax-related conflict at the time of settlement, has been published in Романски, С. 1930: 54–55 and Младенов, М., Б. Нягулов, Н. Жечев 1994: 23–24. In 1899 Weigand found in the village approximately 1500 Bulgarians and later included the village in his atlas as a locality with Bulgarian population (Weigand, G. 1900: 119; Weigand, G. 1909: Map 67). At the time of fieldwork in 1972 there were fifty to sixty Bulgarian families but only the oldest spoke Bulgarian and even they quite rarely. Младенов, М. 1994 contains the dialect texts from Ceacu that present traditional wedding customs. Regarding the local history and traditions see Гарнизов, В. 1994. In Косев, Д., В. Дикулеску, В. Паскалева 1965 and Kosev, D., V. Paskaleva, Vl. Diculescu 1971 the village is referred to as Clocul which seems to be due to misreading of a handwritten archival source, cf. Clocul – Ceacul.
