About the locality: The 1838 registry of the population records the presence of 37 “Serbian” households (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 111). G. Weigand included the village in his atlas as a locality with Bulgaria population (Weigand, G. 1909: Map 67). According to data preserved in S. Romanski’s archive, there were settlers in Târnava from the nearby Bulgarian villages Perişor (40 families who moved in 1828–1829) and Băileşti (30 families who moved in 1864). When Romanski visited the village in 1918, he found 140 households altogether, 120 of them Bulgarian. Младенов, М. 1994 contains the dialect texts from Târnava that present traditional wedding customs.
