About the locality:
The existence of a “Serbian” neighbourhood in Târgovişte was mentioned in documents from 1810. There also were previous Bulgarian settlers: from before 1739 and 1793–1806 (Врабие, Э. 1963: 199; Roman, L. 1984: 133–134). The 1838 registry of the population records the presence of 57 “Serbian” households (Velichi, C. N. 1965: 112). The activity of Bulgarian merchants in Târgovişte is well documented (Kosev, D., V. Paskaleva, Vl. Diculescu 1971: 325). In 1851 many Bulgarians moved from Băleni-Sârbi to the Matei Basarab neighbourhood in the southeastern outskirts of Târgovişte and bought real estate along the Ialomiţa River (Trifonescu, G. 1973: 27). G. Weigand included the city in his atlas as a locality with Bulgarian population (Weigand, G. 1909: Map 67). Both at the time of S. Romanski’s visit and fieldwork in 1969 the main occupation of Bulgarians in Târgovişte was market gardening, which enabled them preserve their traditions and language. Regarding local history see Grasu, S. 2000; Tufeanu, M. 2006 and Нягулов, Б. 2007.
